Every month we audit Meta ad accounts for Fraser Valley businesses, and the same leak appears in most of them. A salon in Abbotsford paying to reach people in Surrey who will never cross the Port Mann for a haircut. A Mission contractor advertising to Vancouver condo dwellers with no gutters to clean. The ads are fine, the offers are fine, and a third of the budget is quietly buying attention from people geography has already disqualified.
Your real service area is not a guess
Before touching any targeting setting, answer one question with data instead of optimism. How far do customers actually travel to you, or how far will you actually travel to them? Pull your last hundred customers and map their postal codes. Most local businesses discover a sharp cliff, perhaps ninety percent within twelve kilometres, a thin tail beyond, and almost nobody past the bridge, the border crossing or the mountain pass. That cliff, not your ambition, is where paid reach should end.
How radius targeting actually works on Meta
Meta lets you target people within a chosen distance of a pin, or within named cities and regions, and lets you exclude areas too. The craft is in the combinations. A med spa might run fifteen kilometres around the clinic for core treatments, add Chilliwack and Langley by name for high value services people travel for, and exclude everything across the American border that sneaks into wide radii around Abbotsford. A mobile service business inverts the thinking, targeting the areas worth driving to rather than the area around the shop.
The valley is not one market
Drawing one big circle over the Fraser Valley treats Aldergrove hobby farmers, downtown Abbotsford renters and Cultus Lake seasonal traffic as the same customer, and they are not. The accounts that perform best here usually split geography into a few zones with different creative. The close zone gets convenience messaging, five minutes away, easy parking. The drive zone gets worth the trip messaging, proof and befores and afters. The occasional zones get seasonal pushes only. Same business, same budget, noticeably better cost per enquiry, because every person sees a reason that actually applies to them.
Tight enough that Mission sees you and Surrey does not
If your service area genuinely needs it, Meta targeting can be tuned until a Mission customer sees your campaign and a Surrey scroller never does. Layer the radius with age, language and interest filters and the audience narrows further. The caution runs the other way, over narrowing. Meta’s delivery system needs a workable audience size to optimize, and an audience filtered down to a few thousand people will deliver erratically and expensively. The craft is cutting the geography that cannot buy while keeping the audience big enough to learn from, and that balance is specific to each business.
Signs your current targeting is leaking
Three quick checks reveal most problems. Open your campaign’s delivery breakdown by region and look for spend landing in cities you have never served. Compare enquiry postal codes against spend geography and look for places you pay for but never hear from. And check whether your radius quietly crosses the border, because wide circles around Abbotsford happily spend Canadian dollars showing ads to Sumas, Washington. Any of these findings typically recovers ten to thirty percent of a budget overnight when corrected.
Geography is half the targeting story
Radius work controls who is eligible to see you. The other half is what they see, and the two multiply. Local creative shown to the right geography is the combination that makes Meta work so well for valley businesses, which is why our Meta ads engagements always start with the customer map before the ad account. We know which neighbourhoods drive to which kinds of businesses because we have watched the data for years, and that knowledge transfers to your campaign on day one instead of being purchased slowly with your budget.
A fifteen minute exercise worth real money
This week, export your customer list, map the postal codes, and open your ads manager delivery report beside it. Where spend and customers diverge, you have found money. Tighten the geography, split the zones if the data supports it, and let the recovered budget press harder where your customers actually live. If you would rather have us do the mapping, it is part of every strategy session at our South Fraser Way office, and it is usually the fastest win in the whole engagement.
