Google Business Profile optimization means keeping your eligible business listing verified, accurate and useful to nearby customers. The basics are appropriate categories, complete services, correct hours, real photos and honest reviews. This can improve local discovery and customer confidence, but it does not guarantee rankings or calls.
Your profile may be a customer's first contact with your business. It shows photos, reviews, hours and contact options. Check whether those details help someone decide to visit, book or call.
How Google decides who shows up locally
Google says local results are based mainly on three things.
- Relevance, meaning how well your profile matches the search
- Distance, meaning how far you are from the searcher or the place they named
- Prominence, meaning how well known and well regarded your business is
You cannot move your building. You can improve relevance and prominence, and that is what the steps below do.
Google Business Profile optimization starts with the basics
Verify and claim your profile
Claim and verify an eligible profile so you can manage its information. Verification does not prevent Google or users from suggesting changes, so check the listing regularly.
Get your name, address and phone exactly right
Use your real business name as it appears on your sign. Adding extra keywords or city names to the name field is against Google's guidelines and can lead to a suspension.
Make sure your address and phone number match what is on your website. If you serve customers at their location and do not have a storefront, set a service area and hide your address.
Choose the right primary category
This is one of the most influential fields. Pick the category that best describes your main service. A clinic that mostly does physiotherapy should be "Physiotherapist", not "Health consultant". Then add secondary categories for other real services.
Fill in everything customers want to know
Services and products
List each service with a short, plain description. Write them the way customers talk. "Emergency furnace repair" is clearer than "HVAC solutions".
Hours, including holidays
Wrong hours cause bad reviews. Update special hours for every statutory holiday in BC. It takes two minutes and Google shows searchers that your hours are confirmed.
Business description
You have 750 characters. Say what you do, who you serve and where. Mention Abbotsford and the nearby areas you actually cover, such as Mission, Chilliwack or Langley. Keep it natural.
Attributes
Wheelchair access, languages spoken, online appointments, payment types. These small details help people choose you.
Photos make a real difference
Real photos help customers understand your business and recognize the location. Add the following where relevant.
- The outside of your location so people can find it
- The inside, especially the reception or work area
- Your team at work
- Before and after shots where appropriate and with permission
- Your vehicles or equipment if you are a trades business
Upload a few new photos every month. Use real pictures taken by you or a photographer. Avoid heavy filters and text overlays.
For clinics and medical spas, always get written consent before posting any photo of a patient or client.
Reviews. The part you cannot fake
Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking. Reviews also help customers assess a business. Do not assume any fixed review count or recency target guarantees a position.
Invite customers with a genuine experience to leave an honest review, whether positive or negative. Use the same neutral request process rather than selecting only happy customers. Make it easy with a direct review link; follow applicable consent rules for promotional follow-ups.
Stay within Google's rules.
- Do not offer discounts, gifts or contest entries for reviews
- Do not ask only the customers you think will be positive while steering unhappy ones elsewhere
- Do not have staff, family or friends post reviews
- Do not buy reviews
Google has become much stricter about fake engagement. Profiles caught breaking the rules can have reviews removed, lose the ability to receive new ones for a period, or carry a public warning.
Reply to every review. Thank people by name. When a review is negative, stay calm, be brief and offer to sort it out offline. Never share personal or health details in a reply.
Use posts and questions
Google posts are short updates that appear on your profile. Share a seasonal offer, a new service, an event or a helpful tip. One post a week or every two weeks is plenty.
Think about the questions people ask before they call, and answer them in your description, services and posts. If a question comes up often, add it to your website too.
Connect your profile to a strong website
Your profile and website work together. Link to the most relevant page, which is usually your home page for a single location or a dedicated location page if you have several.
Make sure that page clearly states what you do and where, shows the same phone number and address, and loads well on a phone. A profile that points to a weak page loses some of its value.
Common mistakes we see in the Fraser Valley
- Duplicate profiles from an old address
- A personal Gmail account owning the profile, with no backup manager
- A mailbox or ineligible virtual office used as an address. Shared offices must meet Google's eligibility conditions, including staffing by your business and receiving customers during stated hours
- Categories that were never updated when services changed
- No reviews in the past six months
- Holiday hours left blank
Prioritize these issues. Some can be corrected directly; others require an appeal, ownership transfer or support assistance.
Track what the profile does for you
The performance section shows how many people viewed your profile, called, asked for directions or clicked to your website. Check it monthly.
Look for trends rather than single days. Calls rising after changes can be encouraging, but seasonality, other marketing and demand may also contribute. If views are high and actions are low, review the information and customer journey. Profile call metrics may reflect call-button clicks rather than completed conversations.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google Business Profile free?
Yes. Creating, verifying and managing a profile costs nothing. Be cautious of anyone who calls claiming to be Google and asking for payment to keep your listing active.
How long does Google Business Profile optimization take to work?
Some changes, like fixing a category, can have an effect within days or weeks. Building reviews and prominence takes longer. Results vary by industry and competition.
Can I use a keyword in my business name?
Use the name consistently used for your business in the real world, such as on signage and other branding. Legal registration alone does not justify extra keywords in the profile name. Adding words solely to rank can violate Google's guidelines.
What should I do if my profile is suspended?
Review Google's guidelines, fix anything that does not comply, and submit an appeal with documents that prove your business is real, such as a business licence or utility bill.
How many reviews do I need?
There is no magic number. Ask customers consistently for honest feedback and focus on the experience you provide. Never buy reviews, offer incentives or filter requests to favour positive responses.
Next steps
Google Business Profile optimization is ongoing maintenance. Check hours, services, photos and review replies regularly so customers receive accurate information. A posting schedule by itself does not guarantee better ranking.
